Abstract
In the combustion process of motorized vehicles, the connecting rod components will experience high cyclic loads due to engine combustion. This study aims to characterize the fatigue resistance of the AISI 4340 steel alloy connecting rod component with the assumption that the component reaches the top dead center. Connecting rod components will be characterized to obtain relevant data so that areas that are vulnerable to failure due to cyclic loads can be identified. The finite element method is one of the effective methods for understanding structural behavior and predicting the fatigue resistance of a component. Based on the simulation results, it can be seen that the stress is concentrated in certain parts, such as in the transition area between the connecting rod shank (stem) and the connecting rod small end, which has the potential to be the initial location for fatigue failure. Based on the results of the simulation, the safety factor in the connecting rod component design shows a figure above 1.5 so it can be assumed that the connecting rod component design in this research is acceptable.
