Abstract

One of the rapid developments in renewable energy is the utilization of wind energy which can be converted into electrical energy for human needs. The focus of this research analyzes the effect of fixed trailing edge flaps on small-scale horizontal axis wind turbines with taperless blades and using the NACA 4412 airfoil profile. The variation carried out is the application of a fixed trailing edge flap type with a variation of angular deflection of 5 °, 10 °, 15 °. This research was conducted with a wind speed of 12 m/s and a TSR value of 7. This research uses the CFD simulation method with the help of Ansys Fluent software. The simulation results obtained different Cp values between variations where the variation of taperless blades without flaps produces Cp = 0.418 in CFD simulations. The simulation results on the variation of taperless blades with flaps of 5°, 10°, 15° have Cp values with Cp=0.455; Cp=0.433; Cp=0.339. The simulation results of the four flap variations show that the highest efficiency is generated from the variation with 5° flaps with a value of Cp=0.455. This helps capture wind energy well without producing significant drag to reduce efficiency.
