Abstract

Whitening cream is a formulation or mixture of substances containing white pigments designed to cover the skin and make it appear lighter. One commonly used compound is hydroquinone, an organic compound belonging to the phenol group. This study aims to analyze hydroquinone in facial whitening creams that do not comply with BPOM regulations and are available on online marketplaces. The determination of hydroquinone content was conducted qualitatively using a FeCl₃ color reaction test and quantitatively using UV-Vis spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 296 nm. The results of the color reaction test on 18 samples indicated that six samples tested positive, as indicated by a black color change. The hydroquinone content in the six positive samples (Q, K, L, N, S, and J), analyzed using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, showed average levels of 0.006%, 0.007%, 0.0068%, 0.0072%, 0.0093%, and 0.0049%, respectively. The study concluded that the hydroquinone levels in these six whitening cream samples did not meet the standards set by BPOM RI Regulation No. 17 of 2022, which permits 0% hydroquinone. The samples were homogeneous (P>0.05) but not normally distributed (P<0.05). Based on the Kruskal-Wallis statistical test, there was no significant difference in the hydroquinone levels among the samples (P>0.05).
