Abstract
Background: Bone Mineral Content (BMC) is one of the indicators used as a measurement of bone mass to prevent osteoporosis in adulthood. College students are a population group at risk of developing osteoporosis, because currently many college students are living an unhealthy lifestyle, such as smoking habits or lack of physical activity which is a risk factor for osteoporosis. Adolescence is a critical period for bone development, so factors such as age, gender, body mass index (BMI), physical activity routine, and smoking can affect BMC. Research Objective: To find out the description of Bone Mineral Content (BMC) in College Students of the Department of Physiotherapy Faculty of Health Sciences Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta. Research Method: This study uses a cross-section research design with the instrument used is the Body Composition Analyzer InBody 570. Research Results: The results showed that college students aged 17-19 years had a higher BMC compared to college students aged 20-23 years. BMC was also found to be higher in male college students compared to female college students. In addition, college students in the normal BMI group to the fat category have a higher BMC compared to college students in the thin category. BMC in college students who do physical activity regularly is higher than college students who do not do physical activity regularly. Then, college students who smoke have a higher BMC compared to college students who do not smoke. Conclusion: This study shows that BMC in college students is influenced by factors such as age, gender, BMI, physical activity routine, and smoking. Thus, this study highlights the importance of considering these factors in efforts to prevent osteoporosis in adulthood.
