Abstract

Hypertension, often referred to as “the silent killer”, can cause severe complications, such as stroke and heart disease, if untreated. Combining slow stroke back massage (SSBM) with warm compress therapy is highly recommended. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of this combination on blood pressure and headache intensity in hypertensive patients. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group approach was used, involving 54 respondents selected through purposive sampling and divided into intervention and control groups. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests. The results showed significant reductions in the intervention group, with systolic blood pressure (SBP) decreasing by 15.33 mmHg (from 145 to 129.67 mmHg) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) decreasing by 16.22 mmHg (from 93 to 76.78 mmHg) (p-value 0.000). Headache intensity also decreased significantly, with the median pain scale dropping from 6 to 2 (p-value 0.000). In contrast, the control group showed no significant changes in blood pressure (SBP p-value 0.19, DBP p-value 0.686) or headache intensity (median of 6, p-value 0.608). This study concludes that the combination of SSBM and warm compress therapy is effective in reducing blood pressure and headache intensity in hypertensive patients.
