Abstract

Pneumonia is one of the main triggers for high rates of morbidity and mortality and globally in children, especially in developing countries like Indonesia. The mortality rate of pneumonia in children under five is higher than diarrhea and malaria. The aim of this study is to determine the risk factors for pneumonia in children under five in Indonesia. This study utilized a cross-sectional design, drawing on secondary data from the Indonesian Health Survey (IHS) 2023. Multistage cluster sampling is the sample method used in this study. Univariate and multivariate analysis using multiple logistic regression were carried out in this study. Out of 80,306 samples, the prevalence of pneumonia in children under five in Indonesia was 1.1% (95% CI: 1.0-1.2). Multivariate analysis revealed that low birth weight history (aPOR: 2.202, 95% CI: 1.780-2.724), household cooking fuel use (aPOR: 1.423; 95% CI: 1.140-1.776), sex (aPOR: 1.321; 95% CI: 1.158-1.507), age (aPOR: 1.259; 95% CI: 1.104-1.436) has a significant correlation with the incidence of pneumonia in children under five. Low birth weight is the leading factor in pneumonia cases. Stakeholders should improve ANC K6 coverage, maternal nutrition programs, and neonatal care access nationwide.
