Abstract

Document image restoration with visual fading presents a significant challenge in preserving information from paper documents degraded by time, temperature, and light exposure. This study develops a document image restoration algorithm for faded documents using a combination of Histogram Equalization and Otsu Binarization Thresholding methods. Histogram Equalization is employed to enhance image contrast, while Otsu Thresholding automatically determines the optimal threshold to separate objects from the background. The algorithm is implemented using the Python programming language, with testing conducted on scanned images of faded documents. Algorithm evaluation is based on the text recognition function of a third party application. Results indicate that the algorithm improves the visual quality of documents, with a 60% success rate from ten tests. The method effectively clarifies text and essential elements, although limitations are observed in images with extreme fading and high noise. This research is expected to make a significant contribution to document image restoration technology, enabling the recovery of faded archival documents for optimal reuse. Further development is recommended to enhance the algorithm's efficiency and ability to handle more complex image conditions.
