Abstract

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a lower respiratory tract infection that occurs ≥48 hours after intubation in mechanical ventilation patients. Risk factors for VAP consist of modifiable and non-modifiable factors. This study aimed to analyze factors associated with the incidence of VAP in mechanical ventilation patients. The study employed an observational analytic method with a prospective approach involving 40 patients on mechanical ventilation in the ICU. The instruments used included observation sheets and Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (CPIS). Hypothesis testing in this study utilized Somers’s d, contingency coefficient, and Kendall’s tau. The analysis revealed significant associations between the duration of mechanical ventilation (p=0.009), and level of consciousness (p=0.021) as modifiable factors, and age (p=0.017) as non-modifiable factor with the incidence of VAP. However, no significant associations were found between antibiotic use (p=0.075), ICU length of stay (p=0.135), and reintubation (p=0.253) as modifiable factors, and gender (p=0.443) and comorbidity (p=0.384) as non-modifiable factors with the incidence of VAP. Healthcare institutions, such as hospitals, are encouraged to evaluate VAP bundle protocols to ensure their effectiveness in preventing VAP.
