Abstract

This study aims to examine the legal force of fingerprints as evidence in proving the responsibility of perpetrators of criminal acts and to analyze the urgency of clear legal regulations regarding the position of fingerprints in the criminal justice system in Indonesia. The research method used is normative juridical with a statutory and conceptual approach. Data sources consist of primary, secondary, and tertiary data, obtained through literature studies and interviews with the INAFIS unit at Polda Metro Jaya. The results of the study indicate that fingerprints have great potential as valid and reliable evidence, but in practice their use is still not optimal. There are shortcomings in the legal provisions governing the legal position of fingerprints as valid evidence and the procedures for collecting, examining, and managing fingerprints to be used as evidence as proof of the responsibility of perpetrators of criminal acts. Therefore, the development of specific and comprehensive regulations is needed to improve the reliability and credibility of fingerprints as evidence in the criminal justice process.
