Abstract

Climate change is a condition of long-term changes in temperature and weather patterns that have a negative impact on society. This condition is caused by human activities and lifestyles, so to overcome it, human roles are also needed, including journalists. Journalists play a role in addressing one of the 17 sustainable development goals regarding reporting. However, on the other hand, journalists have several limitations regarding knowledge, media policy, and scientific climate change issues, causing this issue to become a fringe issue in the mass media. The Indonesian Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) as a journalistic organization is taking part in overcoming climate change through activities to increase the capacity of journalists. This research aims to analyze what is meant by the issue of climate change and how AJI Indonesia constructs this issue among Indonesian journalists in achieving sustainable development by 2030. This research uses a qualitative approach with a constructivist paradigm. The theory used is structuration theory. The informants in this research were the management, secretariat, and members of the AJI Indonesia organization. The results of this research show in the context of structuration, what climate change is and how the construct agreed upon by AJI Indonesia, namely environmental journalism, which is built within journalists to achieve sustainable development in 2030 occurs because of the existence of social practices within the organization, as well as among AJI Indonesia's internal with civil society organizations or Civil Society Organizations (CSO) and donors. In efforts to achieve this form of environmental journalism as a role in overcoming climate change, AJI Indonesia carries out several activities. This activity can be carried out in collaboration with CSOs and donors. In the process, agents and structures within AJI Indonesia as well as CSOs and donors influence each other until a duality is formed.
