Abstract

Objective The surge in recreational diving activities in Indonesia has been accompanied by a concomitant increase in the incidence of decompression sickness (DCS). Prolonged and frequent diving have been established as risk factors for DCS. This research intended for determine the effect of dive duration and frequency on the hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) among DCS patients, with a view to enhancing therapeutic efficacy. Method A cross-sectional study research approach was utilized to investigate medical records of 28 individuals diagnosed with decompression sickness and treated with HBOT at Naval Hospital Dr. Mintohardjo. Result In this study, 20 (71,4%) of the participants were males engaged in recreational diving (60.7%). A significant proportion (64.3%) had dive duration exceeding 30 minutes, with 57.1% performing multiple dives daily. Partial recovery was achieved in 57.1% of the 28 patients. However, neither chi square analysis (p= 0.098) nor Fisher’s exact test (p=0.434) revealed there was a significant relationship between dive frequency and duration and the outcome of HBOT treatment. Conclusion The complexity of DCS is evident according to the study results. Despite the lack of a significant correlation between dive duration and frequency and treatment outcomes, further investigation is warranted to identify other contributing factors to healing process.
