Abstract

Government debt is an important instrument that plays a critical role in supporting fiscal sustainability, both in the short and long term. Countries need debt to maintain development momentum and avoid opportunity loss from essential expenditures that cannot be postponed. This study aims to analyze the impact of macroeconomic indicators on government debt in three selected ASEAN countries: Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. The data used in this study are secondary data obtained from the World Bank, IMF, Trading Economics, and the Lowy Institute Asia Power Index for the period 2013-2023. The analysis method employed is multiple linear regression with a Fixed Effect Model (FEM), along with classical assumption tests and hypothesis testing using Stata 17 software. The results show that, partially, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has a positive and significant effect on government debt, political stability has a negative and significant effect on government debt, and exchange rate has insignificant effect on government debt. Simultaneously, GDP, political stability, and exchange rate collectively influence government debt.
