Abstract

Chronic hyperglycemia associated with diabetes mellitus (DM) can elevate free radical levels in the body, contributing to disease complications and an increasing annual mortality rate. Purple sweet potato leaves (Ipomoea batatas L.) are known to contain bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, tannins, alkaloids, and terpenoids, which offer various benefits, including antioxidant, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of purple sweet potato leaf extract (PSPLE) in influencing the histopathology of the pancreas in Wistar rats used as a model for diabetes research. The research utilized 30 Wistar rats, which were divided into six groups. Group K1 was provided standard feed and Na CMC ad libitum. Group K2 was administered alloxan and a high-fat diet (HFD). Group K3 received alloxan, HFD, and glibenclamide. Group K4 was given alloxan, HFD, and PSPLE at a dose of 150 mg/kg BW. Group K5 received alloxan, HFD, and PSPLE at a dose of 300 mg/kg BW. Group K6 was administered alloxan, HFD, and PSPLE at a dose of 600 mg/kg BW for 18 days. The results of the Kruskal-Wallis test indicated that the administration of PSPLE did not produce statistically significant differences. Experimentally, however, PSPLE at a dose of 600 mg/kg BW demonstrated therapeutic effects on necrotic cell morphology.
