Abstract
Infertility refers to a couple's inability to conceive a child, typically caused by reproductive system disorders in either partner. It is defined as the failure to achieve pregnancy after at least 12 months of regular, unprotected sexual activity (two to three times per week). This global health issue affects one in six adults worldwide, with prevalence rates of 17.8% in high-income countries and 16.5% in low-income countries. Male infertility risk factors include genetic anomalies, anatomical defects, age, heavy metal exposure, smoking, alcohol use, drug consumption, physical activity levels, obesity, and hormonal imbalances. This study investigated the impact of age, obesity, and smoking on sperm morphology and motility in infertile men treated at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto, Jakarta. Conducted as an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design, the research sampled patients undergoing semen analysis at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto in 2023. Data collection employed total sampling and was statistically analyzed to identify relationships between variables. The results showed significant associations between obesity (p = 0.00) and smoking (p = 0.00) with sperm morphology. Additionally, obesity (p = 0.001) and smoking (p = 0.001) were significantly correlated with sperm motility. These findings indicate that only obesity and smoking were significantly associated with both sperm morphology and motility in infertile male patients at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto.
