Abstract

Hyperuricemia is a pathological condition characterized by elevated levels of uric acid in the blood, potentially leading to gout and the complications of nephropathy. This study aims to evaluate the effect of melinjo peel extract (MPE) on uric acid levels in Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced hyperuricemia using potassium oxonate and high purine diet. This study used a true experimental design with five treatment groups: K- (standard diet, distilled water), K+ (allopurinol), and P1, P2, P3 (MPE 6.5 mg/kgBB, 13 mg/kgBB, and 26 mg/kgBB). The results showed that melinjo peel extract contains flavonoids and tannins that act as inhibitors of the enzyme xanthine oxidase, the main mechanism in reducing uric acid levels. The Mann Whitney test results show that MPE has an effect on uric acid levels in Wistar rats induced hyperuricemia because P1, P2, and P3 have significant differences with K- (p < 0.05). The administration of melinjo skin extract at a dose of 13 mg/kgBB provides the most significant reduction in uric acid levels compared to the negative control because it is able to reduce uric acid levels by 41% and has the same potential as allopurinol (p=0.402) in reducing uric acid levels in hyperuricemic Wistar rats.
