Abstract
People with low VO2 max are more likely to develop various chronic diseases later in life. Body fat composition is one of the factors that influences VO2 max. In medical students, a lack of physical activity and poor dietary habits can result in increased body fat or obesity. Obesity can be measured by simple methods, such as using body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and a body shape index (ABSI). The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between BMI, waist circumference, and ABSI with VO2 max in medical students of UPN “Veteran” Jakarta. This research employed an analytical observational method with a cross-sectional design. The research was conducted at the MERCe FK UPNVJ from January - December 2024. The sampling method used was simple random sampling, with a total of 46 participants. The data was gathered through the completion of a questionnaire and the measurement of VO2 max, BMI, waist circumference, and ABSI. Statistical analysis in this study was Mann-Whitney test. The majority of respondents had normal BMI, non-risky waist circumference, and low ABSI. The results of bivariate analysis showed that there is a relationship between waist circumference and VO2 max (p = 0.000) and there is no relationship between VO2 max with BMI (p = 0.344) and ABSI (p = 0.956). Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that there is a relationship between waist circumference and VO2 max, but there is no relationship between BMI and ABSI with VO2 max in medical students of UPN “Veteran” Jakarta.
