Abstract

Objective Medical students face many academic burdens that can cause stress and decreased sleep quality which can have an impact on a decrease in one important aspect of physical fitness, namely cardiorespiratory fitness (VO₂ max). This study aims to identify the relationship between academic stress and sleep quality with VO₂ max in medical students. Method This study is a quantitative study that uses observational analytic methods with a cross-sectional design. A total of 65 female students participated in this study. Academic stress was assessed with the DASS-21 questionnaire, sleep quality with the PSQI questionnaire, and VO₂ max was measured using the Monark ergocycle. Data analysis included univariate analysis with frequency distribution and bivariate analysis with Chi-Square test. Result A total of 41 participants (63.1%) had a very good VO₂ max. A total of 41 participants (63.1%) did not experience stress. A total of 35 participants (53.8%) had poor sleep quality. There was no significant correlation between academic stress and VO₂ max (p=0.054). Meanwhile, there was a significant correlation between sleep quality and VO₂ max (p=0.000). Conclusion There is no significant relationship between academic stress level and VO₂ max and there is a significant relationship between sleep quality and VO₂ max in this study.
