Abstract
Introduction Hyperlipidemia is known to cause an increase in ROS production. The accumulation of ROS can lead to inflammation, which plays a role in the development of insulin resistance. One of the drugs to treat hyperlipidemia is simvastatin. Although it is considered safe for long-term use, there is a possibility of side effects. Therefore, many people are switching to using traditional medicine. Red betel leaves (Piper ornatum) can function as an antihyperlipidemic because they contain alkaloid, saponin, tannin, and flavonoid compounds. Objective The aim of this study is to determine the effect of red betel leaf extract on the histopathological picture of the pancreas in hyperlipidemia Wistar strain rats. Method This experimental study used 30 Wistar strain rats, consisting of three control groups and three treatment groups, which were given red betel leaf extract at doses of 250, 500, and 750 mg/kgBW, followed by the Kruskal-Wallis test. Result The results showed no differences in the histopathological appearance of the pancreas in each treatment group. Conclusion Red betel leaf extract does not affect the improvement of the histopathological picture of the pancreas in hyperlipidemia Wistar strain rats.
