Abstract

Objective Dissatisfaction with life can be associated with several adverse health outcomes, including long-lasting negative health impacts. In the elderly, depressive disorders can make patients and families feel miserable, worsen medical conditions, result in movement disorders, and require a proper support system. Various studies have previously been carried out to identify risk factors related to depression in the elderly. Still, none have entirely focused on biological aspects in researching the causes of depression in the elderly in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the relationship between physical activity, cognitive ability, and history of illness and depressive disorders in the elderly. Method This quantitative study employs a cross-sectional design to investigate the relationship between physical activity, cognitive ability, and medical history among elderly subjects at the School of Elderly RPTRA Pinang Pola in South Jakarta. The minimum sample size was determined to be 33 participants, calculated using the Proportion Difference Hypothesis Testing formula based on prior research. Primary data were collected directly from respondents through distributed questionnaires. The analysis included univariate analysis to assess the distribution of each variable, in addition to bivariate analysis utilizing the chi-square test to explore relationships between variables. Result The findings indicate that out of 34 elderly participants, 30 (88.2%) exhibit non-concerning levels of depression, while 4 (11.8%) demonstrate light depression. In terms of physical activity, 4 individuals (11.8%) report light activity levels, 22 (64.7%) have moderate activity levels, and 8 (22.3%) engage in heavy activity. Cognitive ability assessments reveal that 1 participant (2.9%) falls below average, 32 (94.1%) have normal cognitive ability, and 1 (2.9%) is above average. Regarding medical history, 21 participants (61.8%) have 0-2 diseases, while 13 (38.2%) have more than 2 diseases. Bivariate analyses show no significant relationships between physical activity and depression levels (p = 0.551), cognitive ability and depression levels (p = 0.118), and history of illness and depression levels (p = 0.627). Conclusion The conclusion that can be drawn from this research is that elderly people who experience levels of depression are not more of a concern than elderly people who have higher levels of depression. Then, some more elderly people have a moderate activity level than elderly people who have a light and heavy activity level. In addition, some elderly people have an average level of cognitive ability compared to older people with a cognitive level above and below the average. Then, elderly people who have a history of 0-2 diseases are more likely than elderly people who have a history of >2 diseases. In bivariate analysis, it was found that there was no significant relationship between physical activity and depression level, there was no significant relationship between cognitive ability and depression level, and there was no significant relationship between history of illness and depression level.
