Abstract
Incidents of overnutrition due to uncontrolled food intake among early adult groups often occur in Indonesia. Emotional Eating is an unhealthy eating behavior and tends to consume excessive food to overcome negative emotions. Several factors that can influence the occurrence of Emotional Eating, especially in women and female students, are changes in emotions and psychological conditions that many women experience during the pre-menstrual period and also exposure to social media. Emotional Eating in the long term will have an impact on a person's health and nutritional status. This study aims to determine the relationship between Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) and exposure to social media with Emotional Eating behavior in female students at the Faculty of Health Sciences, UPN "Veteran" Jakarta in 2024. This research method uses a cross-sectional design and the sample was taken using a stratified random sampling technique, namely 139 respondents. The results of the analysis using the Chi-Square test showed that there was a relationship between Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) (p = 0.010) and exposure to social media (p = 0.000) with Emotional Eating behavior in female students at the Faculty of Health Sciences, UPN "Veteran" Jakarta. The research results showed that female students with severe symptoms during PMS had a 5.3 times greater risk of experiencing Emotional Eating and female students who were exposed to food-related content on social media had a 2.2 times greater risk of experiencing Emotional Eating. Women in early adulthood, especially female students, are advised to pay more attention to healthy eating when approaching menstruation or when facing feelings of stress and other negative emotions to avoid Emotional Eating behavior.
