Abstract

Natural mucilage used as an alternative excipient in pharmaceutical applications has garnered attention due to its lower cost compared to synthetic and semi-synthetic excipients. Hibiscus leaf mucilage powder (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L.) is one such natural mucilage that can be used as a tablet binding excipient. This study aims to evaluate the effect of varying concentrations of Hibiscus leaf mucilage (MHR) powder on the physical characteristics of Moringa leaf dry extract tablets. The extraction of MHR powder was carried out using conventional methods. Tablets were prepared by direct compression using MHR powder concentrations of 2%, 3%, and 4% in formulations F1, F2, and F3, respectively. Formulation F0 did not use a binding excipient, and F4 used the synthetic binder Avicel PH 102 at a concentration of 20%. Tablet evaluations included tests for moisture content, particle size distribution, angle of repose, compressibility, organoleptic properties, hardness, friability, and disintegration time. Results showed that formulations F0, F1, and F2 produced defective tablets, whereas F3 met all physical tablet requirements except for the hardness test. The variation in MHR powder concentration significantly affected the physical characteristics of the tablets, specifically friability, hardness, and disintegration time (p<0.05). A 4% concentration of MHR powder provided better physical characteristics for the tablets.
