Abstract

A ship is a water vehicle with various shapes, equipped with propulsion power, and has various transportation functions as well as auxiliary tools in the maritime world. However, on ships categorized as very large, the resistance generated can be greater. This issue requires a new breakthrough necessary to reduce resistance. The new breakthrough that has emerged to reduce air resistance is the windshield. In this study conducted by the author, the windshield is varied at the bow of the ship, which functions as part of the ship's aerodynamics. There are 5 different speeds to test the effectiveness of the windshield. At a scale of 1 : 31,6, the windshield has a height of 787,26 mm, a width of 489,56 mm, a length of 1023,46 mm, and a thickness of 10 mm. The research uses CFD Ansys Fluent software, conducted with the Volume of Fluid method that produces air resistance and water resistance values. The analysis was carried out with the SST k-omega turbulence model and 1% turbulence intensity. This research concluded that the windshield can reduce air resistance and total resistance on the ship. Water resistance is slightly reduced, which can be partly due to the windshield model affecting the ship's structural model. The windshield can effectively reduce air resistance at speeds of 19 knots to 23 knots. The windshield is very effective at a speed of 19 knots with an air resistance value of 1,736. Based on this, this research can provide new knowledge regarding the effectiveness of the windshield in reducing both air resistance and total resistance
