Abstract

Communicating in real-time over the internet has certainly become a common thing. One example of an application that requires real-time data delivery is a chat application. There are several strategies that can be used in making chat applications, including using polling, long polling, websocket and webtransport techniques. With the many methods that can be used, therefore research is needed that compares the performance of the websocket method with the webtransport method in making chat applications. This research will compare the two communication technologies using black box testing and load testing methods by paying attention to response time, connection time, error rate, memory usage, and CPU utilization metrics. The results showed that in a concurrency test of 1000 users, websocket response time was 400% faster than webtransport with results of 4355 ms for websocket and 18057 ms for webtransport. In addition, the CPU and memory utilization is almost 200% lower. 74% CPU usage and 241 MiB memory usage for websocket, and 130% CPU usage and 551 MiB memory usage for webtransport. This shows that in the context of creating chat applications, using websocket has better performance than using webtransport.
