Abstract

E-sports, or electronic sports, have become a global phenomenon that has achieved significant development in recent years. This phenomenon not only affects the world of entertainment, but also touches various aspects of life, including international relations. The Southeast Asia region is one of the growth centers for e-sports which has recorded a rapid increase in popularity. By attending the 2018 Asian Games for the first time, which is the leading medal sports Olympic platform in the region, the case studies that will be researched in the period 2018, 2020, 2022 can provide in-depth insight into how e-sports influences cooperation at the regional level. The method used is a qualitative method using public diplomacy theory and state policy concepts. This research shows that the problem of E-Sports being used as an official competition in sports events with the biggest medals in Southeast Asia. This problem raises the question of how big the impact of the competition is to the point that it can become an official competition event? and the influence it brings, such as the decision taken by regional countries, organizations and related institutions to make E-Sports an official competition event in the Asian Games in 2018, 2020, 2022. The ASEAN organization is finally collaborating with the world E-Sports federation to improve and develop E-Sports into an industry that can provide recognition to regional countries and have a good impact on the economic, tourism and cultural sectors. The ASEAN strategy is in the form of officially holding the first E-Sports competition at the 2018 Asian Games. This strategy has succeeded in having a positive impact on these sectors and promoting the competition.
