Abstract
This thesis examines Indonesia's sports diplomacy through PSSI (Indonesian Football Association) with FIFA regarding Indonesia's failure to host the 2023 U-20 World Cup. Indonesia had allocated a total of approximately Rp1.4 trillion, with an additional funding request of Rp3 trillion from the Minister of Youth and Sports in 2022, to prepare infrastructure and facilities for hosting the U-20 World Cup. The cancellation of Indonesia's host status resulted in economic losses and a tarnished reputation as a host country. This research aims to analyze data and explain Indonesia's diplomatic efforts in dealing with the cancellation of its hosting of the 2023 U-20 World Cup. The research methodology used in this thesis is descriptive qualitative research. Data were obtained through literature reviews, analysis of official documents, interviews, and primary sources relevant to the research topic. The results of the study indicate that Indonesia, through PSSI, successfully conducted sports diplomacy with FIFA and found a solution to this issue by becoming the host of the 2023 U-17 World Cup. Hosting the U-17 World Cup allowed Indonesia to mitigate the losses incurred from failing to host the U-20 World Cup and to demonstrate to the global football community that Indonesia is capable of being a good host. Additionally, this diplomacy can be considered successful as FIFA did not impose severe sanctions on Indonesia. This research provides insights into how Indonesian sports diplomacy handled the 2023 U-20 World Cup issue. The findings of this study are expected to serve as a reference for the government and PSSI to ensure thorough preparations when hosting international events.
