Abstract

Asphyxia is a major cause of mordibity and neonatal mortality. According to data from the WHO, the infant mortality rate in the world are caused by neonatal asphyxia by 23 % of live births. In Indonesia, asphyxia mortality in a hospital referral centre provinces in Indonesia amounted to 41,98%. Neonatal asphyxia can be affected by various risk factors, namely factors ante partum and intra partum factors. In addition, low birth weight can be one of the causes of neonatal asphyxia. This study aims to determine the correlation between a history of low birth weight with neonatal asphyxia events and to find out how big the effect of birth weight on the incidence of neonatal asphyxia in hospital Pemangkat Sambas, West Kalimantan regency period January to June 2013. These descriptive analytic study, using design case-control and using secondary data. How the selection of samples by purposive sampling and simple random sampling found 41 cases and 41 controls. The results of the analysis using the chi square test revealed that there is a relationship between low birth weight with neonatal asphyxia ( p = 0.000 < 0.05), and infants with low birth weight are at risk for 12.564 times the incidence of neonatal asphyxia ( OR = 12.564 ).
