Abstract

THE INFLUENCE OF COGNITIVE TRANSCENDENCE STRATEGY (CTS) ON STRESS LEVELS IN MEDICAL STUDENTS EXPERIENCED WITH INTERNET ADDICTION AND INSOMNIA ABSTRACT Objectives: Internet addiction is a condition wherein an individual excessively uses the internet. Individuals with internet addiction commonly experience sleep disturbances, known as insomnia. Factors influencing insomnia include stress or anxiety, depression, sleep apnea, substance use side effects, poor dietary habits, caffeine overdose, nicotine, alcohol, and sedentary lifestyle. Cognitive Transcendence Strategy (CTS) is a behavior change method that integrates neuroscience and spirituality, focusing on cognitive abilities based on brain neuroplasticity and spiritual experiences. This research aims to assess the impact of implementing CTS on stress levels in medical students experiencing internet addiction and insomnia. Methods: The research employed a quantitative experimental method with a Quasi-Experimental Nonequivalent Control Group design. CTS intervention spanned 7 weeks, from August to October 2023. Data collection involved distributing the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) questionnaires. Stress levels were evaluated using the HRV Analyzer. The research sample comprised 16 students selected through purposive sampling, divided into treatment and control groups. Results: Data analysis utilized the Wilcoxon test. Results indicated that in the treatment group, 3 individuals showed improvement, and 1 individual exhibited deterioration. Meanwhile, the control group had 3 individuals with improvement and 3 individuals with deterioration. The Wilcoxon hypothesis test revealed a p-value of 0.257 for the treatment group and 0.748 for the control group, indicating no significant differences. Conclusion: CTS or mindfulness has the potential to be used to influence the stress levels of students with internet addiction and insomnia, although statistically it does not have a significant effect. Keywords: Cognitive Transcendence Strategies, Insomnia, Internet Addiction, Medical Students, Stress.
