Abstract
The progress of technology presents a new difficulty in the emergence of a cybercrime known as doxing, which involves the unauthorised extraction, disclosure, and dissemination of personal data or information. The press serves as the fourth pillar of democracy, playing a crucial role in ensuring the effective functioning of democracy and safeguarding press freedom. The press council plays a crucial role in safeguarding journalists from doxing and external entities targeting them. The press council, established by Law Number 40 of 1999 concerning The Press, protects press freedom by preventing interference from external entities. This study employs normative juridical research methodologies, utilising data gathering techniques such as literature reviews and interviews. The obtained results will be subjected to qualitative analysis, involving a thorough assessment and examination of the acquired research materials and their underlying substance. The findings indicate that the press council should enhance its influence by enacting a decree pertaining to the Standards for the Protection of Journalist Professionals, in addition to other measures outlined in this study. Moreover, journalists should be cognizant of the need to report incidents of doxing and address them through the press council. It is also important for journalists to adhere to the provisions outlined in the Journalistic Code of Ethics. Additionally, press companies that are not recognised as Indonesian legal entities should take steps to establish themselves as such, enabling the press council to provide optimal protection for journalists who fall victim to doxing.
