Abstract
Background: Unhealthy lifestyle such as physical inactivity is a risk for cardiovascular disease which can be detected by measuring heart rate variability (HRV). Medical students generally study intensely so physical activity is infrequent. Physical activity is thought to affect muscle mass. Gender, circadian rhythm, and stress also affect HRV. These factors correspond with medical students who often experience stress and sleep late. Therefore, this study aims to determine the relationship between physical activity and HRV in medical students in Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta (UPNVJ). Methods: The design used is cross-sectional with observational study design. Primary data was collected using questionnaire, Tanita Medical Body Composition Analyzer (MC-980MA Plus), and Heart Rate Variability Analyzer (SA-3000p). Fifty-seven samples were analyzed using Chi-Square and Fisher hypothesis tests. Results: There is no significant relationship between physical activity (p = 0.446), muscle mass (p = 1.000), and gender (p = 0.544) with HRV, while there is significant relationship between stress (0.000) and circadian rhythm ( 0.004) with HRV. Conclusion: There is no significant relationship between physical activity and HRV. Nevertheless, in this study there is a significant relationship between stress and circadian rhythm with HRV. Keywords: physical activity, heart rate variability (HRV), muscle mass.
