Abstract
Introduction: Appendicitis can be treated using invasive and non-invasive methods. Invasive procedures include surgical procedures such as appendectomy and laparoscopy. Every surgical procedure carries a risk of infection. Prevention of post-operative infections can be done by administering prophylactic antibiotics. However, administering inappropriate antibiotics can cause prolonged treatment and even death. This study aims to evaluate the use of prophylactic antibiotics in appendicitis surgery patients at the Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital in 2021-2023. Method: This study used an observational analytical design with a cross sectional approach. Data collection was carried out retrospectively based on medical records. The respondents of this study were all appendicitis surgery patients who received prophylactic antibiotics. Data analysis uses univariate. Results: that from 32 samples there were 2 types of antibiotics used, namely ceftriaxone (78.1%) and a combination of ceftriaxone and metronidazole (21.9%). The characteristics of appendicitis surgery patients at the Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital are 18 patients (56.3%) male and 11 patients (34.4%) are predominantly productive ages ranging from 26-35 years. Of the 32 samples evaluated, 23 antibiotics were found to be rational and 9 antibiotics were irrational, including category IIA or incorrect administration interval and categories III A and IIIB where the duration of administration was incorrect. Conclusion: Based on the research results, it was found that the use of antibiotics in appendicitis surgery patients at Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital is still not 100% rational.
