Abstract

Sexual harassment and silencing of women are still common today. Deprived of their rights, made weak and helpless without being given the opportunity to speak, silent and made unable to be honest about what they feel and faced. Women’s self-silencing is often found in cases of sexual harassment. Victims and witnesses of sexual harassment are often found in positions where they are intimidated, threatened, accused, or isolated. There are many factors that make victims and witnesses choose to remain silent, such as the patriarchal culture that still exist and the society bad stigma towards survivors of sexual harassment. However, the root of the self-silencing of women victims and witnesses of sexual harassment is the problem of the power inequality between the perpetrators and victims. This phenomenon was made into a short film entitled “Please Be Quiet”. The purpose of the research in raising this discussion is to describe and represent the self-silencing of women victims and witnesses of sexual harassment in the film “Please Be Quiet”. The writer used qualitative analytical methods and took John Fiske’s semiotic analysis technique to understand how the signs of woman self-silencing victims and witnesses of sexual harassment in films are constructed. The writer used Muted Group Theory to become the basis of this research. The result of this study found that nine out of eleven scenes represented women’s silence. Language and culture that is dominated by men can be an obstacle for women in conveying their experiences accurately because women’s language is not sufficient to express the complexities of sexual harassment, so women choose to be silence. The writer also found that the root of the women silencing is patriarchy.
