Abstract

Stepped planing hull or step hull is a hull modification whose principle is to reduce the wetted surface area. This type of hull is still rarely used although several ships using this type of hull have proven its effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of variations in the angle of step hull and non-step hull on it’s resistance and identify the Response of Amplitude Operator (RAO) on both step hull and non-step hull ships. This study used the CFD method and there were 3 hull model configurations in hull step angle of 180º, 210º, 240º and 270º. The results of this study revealed that the 270º step hull model is the hull model with the lowest average total resistance with a reduced resistance of 45.2% compared to the non-step hull. However, for the ship's seakeeping this model experienced an increase in response to pitch, roll and yaw movements. Meanwhile, the model that has the best ship response with the same configuration belongs to the model with a hull step angle of 240º with an average resistance reduction of 40.7%. This study concludes that the increase in hull step angle is in line with the reduction in resistance. But inversely proportional to the response received by the ship. Thus, this research can provide an understanding of the step hull and become a reference in the development of the step hull.
