Abstract
Prison officers at the Correctional Institution are responsible for providing coaching facilities, accommodating complaints, and providing advice to inmates. However, every inmate who is in prison only depends on prison officers. Violent communication often occurs in prisons, causing frontal actions from inmates. So, it is possible that the openness carried out by female prisoners is caused by the tradition or culture given by prison officers. This study aims to discuss interpersonal communication carried out by prison officers in fostering self-disclosure of female prisoners in Lembaga Pemasyarakatan Perempuan Kelas IIA Tangerang by using self-disclosure theory. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative using a case study approach. Sources of data obtained from primary data sources and secondary data. Data collection techniques were conducted by interview, observation, and documentation. The informants used in this study were 10 (ten) people, consisting of 6 (six) inmates and 4 (four) prison officers. Researchers used four stages of data analysis according to Miles & Huberman, namely data collection, data reduction, data presentation, withdrawal/verification by triangulation of data sources. The results of this study indicate that the interpersonal communication of prison officers in fostering prisoners at the Class IIA Tangerang Penitentiary is very good. Prison officers can act according to their functions and duties in the correctional system. The communication built in the Lapas Perempuan Kelas IIA Tangerang is family communication. Every prisoners is provided with activities to support the skills needed in prison. Prisoners find it helpful to adapt and socialize with the prison environment. Self-disclosure can occur when prison officers and inmates have a close relationship with each other so that they can open up to each other.
