Abstract
Currently, smoking behavior in students is not a new thing, even some people normalize this behavior. Indonesia is the third-highest smoker in the world and the first in Southeast Asia. It was found that almost half of smokers in Indonesia are in the student age category, this condition can reduce productivity and increase mortality at a young age. The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation between age, gender, peer influence, and stress with smoking behavior. This study uses quantitative methods with a cross-sectional research design. The population in this study were students of SMA Wijaya Kusuma Jakarta. The number of samples was 309 respondents with a total sampling technique and data collection using a questionnaire. The instrument used were peer influence questionnaires, stress influence questionnaires, and smoking behavior. Based on the analysis of the Spearman correlation test, the results showed that there was a positive correlation between the influence of peers (p-value = 0.015) and stress (p-value = 0.002) with smoking behavior, and had a moderately close relationship. However, there was no correlation between age (p-value = 0.407) and gender (p-value = 0.184) with smoking behavior. It can be concluded that the effect of stress is the dominant factor that influences students to smoke. Students can do positive activities such as doing physical activity and developing hobbies, interests, and talents that can increase stress resistance to avoid smoking behavior.
