Abstract

Congenital disorders are still a problem in Indonesia. Congenital abnormalities that can occur are spinal disorders. Spinal development begins with somite development in early life. One of the causes of congenital abnormalities is the use of drugs during pregnancy. Co-trimoxazole is a drug that has the potential to cause congenital abnormalities due to the drug's mechanism of inhibiting folic acid. Folic acid is an essential compound in fetal development. Chicken embryos can be used to simulate human embryo development. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of cotrimoxazole on somite development of chicken embryos. This research is a post-test only control group design. Sampling was done by simple random sampling with a sample of 30 eggs with a successful reading of 11 eggs. Data were analyzed based on sample characteristics and bivariate analysis using One Way Anova comparative test and Post-Hoc test. The instrument used was the observation of the number of somites. The results of the bivariate analysis showed a p value of 0.010 < 0.050 (α). Thus, it can be concluded that there is an effect of cotrimoxazole on somite development of chicken embryos.
