Abstract

Adolescence is a time when people are changing from being children to adults, and as a result, they will go through various upheavals. They must start opening up because of the urge and desire to develop a relationship with the other gender. This holds true for all teens, including those attending boarding schools. However, because there are strong laws that forbid individuals from make relation with the other gender, their desire in and purpose to having a relationship need to be reevaluated. This impedes the flow of information and breeds ambiguity that obstructs the development of their relationship. Therefore, this ambiguity needs to be lessened in order to maintain the relationship. The purpose of this study was to study how the strategy of Islamic boarding school students to avoid ambiguity at the beginning of their relationship. With a phenomenological perspective, this study uses a quasi-qualitative methodology. Direct, in-depth interviews with six informants were used to collect the study data. Uncertainty Reduction Theory and Self Disclosure Theory is then used to analyse the data. The results show that interpersonal communication is used as a strategy to reduce uncertainty. Interpersonal communication serves as a conduit for information, a way to verify the veracity of information gleaned from informants about the other, as well as an adhesive and a means of fostering intimacy in relationship. This research also reveals the basic reason why teenage santri want to be in a relationship is because they are curious and need someone who encourages them.
