Abstract
Slamming is a phenomenon occuring due to the movement of the ship related to a sudden change in the ship’s acceleration which can have an impact on the damage to the ship's construction. Catamarans can experience slamming when moving at certain speeds and in certain wave conditions resulting from the bow’s vertical motion relative to the waves. This study focuses on 25.25-meter catamarans with variation in the nabla-typed bulbous bows in linear parameters of length with CLPR = 0; 0.015; 0.03; 0.045; and 0.06. In this research, software were used including Maxsurf Modeler Advanced for modeling, Ansys CFX to determine the ship’ resistance in the Froude Number range 0.5–0.7, and Ansys Aqwa to obtain RAOs and the phase angle of the heaving and pitching motion with a wave direction of 180°. The obtained RAO values were used in the analysis of the bow's relative vertical motion used in the analysis of the response spectrum to the ITTC wave spectrum. The result of the calculations shows the ship’s resistance and the probability of slamming on the five catamaran models. The probability of slamming models B-0, B-1.5, B-3, B-4.5, and B-6 are respectively 2.9%; 2.2%; 1.9%; 1.7%; and 1.0% at the significant wave height of 0.6 meters and the ship’s speed of 9.44 m/s which the values corresponding the 1987 Nordforks standard criteria. The results indicate that there is the geometric effect of the bulbous bows to the probability of slamming on catamaran with no overrides of the bulbous bow’s main function to reduce ship’s resistance.
