Abstract
Menstrual pain or what is known as dysmenorrhea, is the most common disorder in gynecology which is characterized by colic pain in the suprapubic area. The severity varies from 34% to 94% that making a person less productive and did not attend school. The motive of this study is to determine the risk factors that affect the incidence of dysmenorrhea in medical college students of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta. The risk factors inspected in this study were the age of menarche, family history, menstrual duration, stress, and sleep quality. The design of this study is cross-sectional using stratified random sampling as a sampling technique on 77 respondents. Data were obtained through the DASS 42 questionnaire to assess stress, PSQI to assess sleep quality, and WaLIDD to assess dysmenorrhea. The majority of respondents experienced dysmenorrhea, normal age at menarche, had a family history of dysmenorrhea, had normal menstrual duration, experienced stress, and had poor sleep quality. The result of bivariate evaluation with Chi Square test indicates that family history (p=0,022), stress (p=0,002), and sleep quality (p=0,001) showed that there was a relationship with the incidence of dysmenorrhea. There was no relationship between age of menarche (p=0.288) and menstrual duration (p=1,000) with the incidence of dysmenorrhea. The result of the multivariates test shows the most influenced factor of dysmenorrhea was the quality of sleep (OR=14,444). A person’s sleep quality is related to the mechanism of increasing inflammatory mediators, that’s is IL-6 and TNF α which play a role in pain during menstruation.
